Chile Pepper Challenge

September 29, 2024 Starting at 7AM

This year’s Chile Pepper Challenge will feature the Upper and Mesilla Valleys with four different route alternatives for cyclists of all skill levels and ambition. All rides are fully supported with rest stops, route markings, and SAG vehicles. Rest stops offer snacks, water, and porta-potties. Rides will start and finish at Grace Gardens, 6701 Westside Dr, El Paso, TX 79932.

The 5 mile fun ride is a flat and easy to ride family friendly loop.

Our 25 mile route is a relatively flat lollipop course and provides a taste of the cycling variety available in the Upper Valley. Featuring a cruise up Westside Drive, the loop starts via Dairy Farm Road with a slight excursion and short easy climb up to the Anthony rest stop. The loop resumes on Ohara Road going towards Highway 28, passing the El Paso Bicycle Clubs’s friends at the Anthony Country Club. A quick 2 mile hop on Hwy 28 brings the loop back to Westside Drive for the 6 mile cruise back to the start.

The 40 mile route is also a relatively flat lollipop route that expands on the the 25 mile route to highlight even more of the cycling variety the Upper Valley has to offer. Featuring a cruise up Westside Drive, the loops starts via Dairy Farm Road and Ohara Road with a short climb to the Anthony rest stop. Lying between the mountains and the river valley, the frontage road up towards Vado offers great big sky views of the area. Vado road drops riders back into the river valley crossing the Rio Grande on the way to Highway 28. The farm fields of Highway 28 offer an escape from urban life as they lead back to Westside drive to close the lollipop and bring riders to the finish.

The El Paso Bicycle Club’s route guru, Bob, went all out in featuring the very best of the Upper and Mesilla Valley for the 61 mile route. This ride starts with a 5 mile loop on local favorite McNutt Road leading to Westside Drive where the large lollipop segment starts. Cruising up Westside Drive, the lollipop starts via Dairy Farm Road and Ohara Road with a short climb to the Anthony rest stop. Lying between the mountains and the river valley, the frontage road up towards Mesquite offers great big sky views of the area. Highway 228 drops riders off the frontage road and into the river valley and the Mesquite rest stop. Out of the way hidden gem roads lead to Snow road and linking up with the pecan orchard covered segment of Highway 28. The pecan orchards and farm fields of Highway 28 and a few more hidden gem roads, lead to Westside drive to close the lollipop segment and guide riders home back to the start.

About the Chile Pepper Challenge

Perhaps one of the proudest achievements of the El Paso Bicycle Club is developing the Chile Pepper Challenge into El Paso’s premier cycling event. What started out as an organized century ride for club members in the 1980’s, gained popularity over the years. Eventually the Chile Pepper Challenge blossomed, with cyclists traveling from all over the region to participate. The ride peaked when almost 1,000 cyclists lined up for an epic ride through the scenic and historic Mesilla Valley, along pecan orchard covered country lanes, and riding by New Mexico’s world renowned chile fields.

After a brief hiatus, the future looks bright! The El Paso Bicycle Club’s hard work has paid off and we are able to once again welcome riders from all over the tri-state/bi-national region to ride with us at the Chile Pepper Challenge.

The Chile Pepper Challenge offers routes, distances for cyclist of all skill levels and ambition.  Several ride alternatives are available, 61 miles, 40 miles, 25 miles and a 5 mile fun ride.  All rides are fully supported with rest stops, route markings and SAG vehicles. Rest stops offer snacks, water and port-a-potties. Food and drinks are provided to all riders at the end of the ride. We look forward to riding with you soon!
